Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal wants to sign a superstar

Louis van Gaal says he needs to sign a superstar to help achieve his ambition of winning the Premier League before he leaves the club in two years. Speaking with Sky Sports News HQ’s Vinny O’Connor, the Dutchman admitted that is the time limit he has given himself to win the Premier League title, after which he will walk away from the club, whatever happens. And to give himself the greatest chance of realising his ambition and delivering Manchester United's fourth European title, Van Gaal says he needs to sign a player like Cristiano Ronaldo."I think we still need more speed in front and also more creativity and that is why I want (Angel) Di Maria to stay, but, we don't know that so we will have to see,” he said. "Bayern Munich – they have Ribery and Robben. Chelsea have Hazard and Willian. Real Madrid: Ronaldo and Bale. Barcelona: Neymar and Messi. "(Ashley) Young and (Juan) Mata had fantastic seasons with assists and goals but to win the Champions League you need speed also. That is why I think, maybe, we still have to buy a player with speed and creativity." So is Ronaldo's return a realistic possibility?I cannot answer these questions. When we shall buy a player and he has signed, then we shall say. But not in a process and not in a strategy,” he said. "I cannot say that. I want to say it. For the fans I want to say it. But it is not smart. I have to protect the interests of the club." When asked what he thought of Ronaldo the player, he was a little more forthcoming. "Now, I make an exception for Ronaldo. He is a fantastic player. But he knows that. But I like him," he said.

Stewart Downing on Teesside for Middlesbrough medical

Stewart Downing has arrived back on his native Teesside as he prepares to rejoin former club Middlesbrough. The 30-year-old, who made 37 appearances for West Ham in the Premier League last season, returned north for a medical with the Championship side after being left out of the Hammers’ Europa League squad to face Birkirkara. Downing, capped 35 times for England, began his career with his home-town club before earning a £12m move to Aston Villa in July 2009. He then swapped life in the Midlands for Liverpool, who paid £20m for his services two years later.The 28-year-old, who scored 16 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions last season, is set to join for a reported £2.8m, with half of the fee going to his former club Reggina. A statement from Espanyol read: "The Uruguay striker will join Middlesbrough once he passes a medical and signs his contract with the English club.”

Arturo Vidal wanted at Bayern Munich by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge

Chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says he wants midfielder Arturo Vidal to join Bayern Munich from Juventus. The Italian Champions League finalists have received an offer from Bayern of £28m (€40m) for the Chile international midfielder, according to The Guardian. Vidal, who won the Copa America with Chile this summer, would be seen as a welcome addition at the Allianz Arena as coach Pep Guardiola looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the new campaign.With the Bundesliga champions heading to China for an eight-day pre-season tour, Rummenigge told reporters at Munich airport: "I hope that Arturo Vidal will join us in the end. Derek McInnes heaped praise on his Aberdeen players after their stunning 3-0 Europa League qualifying win over Rijeka in Croatia but has warned his side that the tie is not finished yet.
